The woman had been walking for nearly an hour that evening, scanning the sidewalk. Her rent was past due and she was hoping for a dropped bill, a five. God, even a one would be welcome at this point. And then it came to her: just take a man home. She had seen it before herself, even in this tidy part of downtown, she'd noticed normal-enough-looking women strolling down the sidewalks as if on their way to coffee but over time she noticed too men passing and licking their lips. Clearly, they were meeting up for some secret commerce. She hadn't made the connection for the longest time. Now, stuck in her financial predicament, it had come to her: just take a man home. Maybe it's all in the tongue, the woman thinks, that's how the girls signal the men. But do you lick your lips clockwise, and that means he'll follow you around the block in that direction? Of course she had no idea how to actually go about this and the evening had grown late so she walked on home alone. She was back at her apartment building, sliding her key into the lock when a voice from behind stammered, "D-do you have the time?"
